“The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular,” said TV historian Tim Brooks, who helped launch Sci Fi Channel when he worked at USA Network.

The Sci Fi network announces a name change.

Purely based on the spelling Syfy, I would refuse to watch it. Now that I know they're actually trying to insult my intelligence? I mean at least Oxygen is a little subtle about it.

Stupid misspellings: Yeah, "Syfy", way to alienate your core audience of geeky people (proud to be smart, right?), including lots of happily geeky women.

.. you'd think this would be a good thing since most of their fanbase ARE geeks, so.. why is that a bad thing?

lol .. seems a bit counter-productive.

As a female Sci-Fi fan, I find this ridiculously silly. We love the "geeky!" Besides, Sci-Fi is exactly what it is; Science Fiction. Why come up with a new name when the original aint broke?!
